Using your mobile phone with your simcard from home, can be very expensive, specially if you have your phone set to answer when no contact, phone busy, or after 3 ringings, so if you prefer to use your normal phone number, then turn that facility off, otherwise you will be charged by your provider for both the call roaming to Thailand, and again you also pay the returning traffic to the answering machine.
If you like to stay in contact with other travelers, then use SMS messages or get a prepaid simcard for your phone.
Prepaid simcards are available all over town in phoneshops, actually most of the Thais are using such a number.
Refill cards for the prepaid simcards are available in all minimart, supermarkets, phoneshops.
